He's softspoken, but Iowa City Spoken Word poet Caleb Rainey's words are profound, and can be jolting. Nik Heftman's film, "The Negro Artist" offers moving context.
I love this story, the people featured in it, and the columnist who brought another dimension to the one Nik Heftman is telling in this portrayal oc Caleb Rainey.
So talented. Parts of it remind me of something that happened to a girl I knew of who belonged to an organization that I belonged to. She was well accepted as a member but when she made her way up to a top position, parents ("elders") rebelled, almost en masse. She wanted to back out and drop her membership. A few people encouraged her to stay. Don't know how it ended because it was in another town and wasn't "talked about" in the assembly I belonged to. Some day. Yeah, still waiting. Some day. . . .
I applaud Caleb in navigating a crazy world and pursuing his passion and his craft, and I thank him for sharing his stories and insights with everyone.
Thank you so much for this beautiful piece, Rekha. Im so grateful. I remember reading your work as a college journalist nearly a decade ago. It truly feels like a dream for you to write about my work. Thank you again.
